Nova Scotia 1853, 1d red brown (1), pair, large to just clear margins and 3d blue (2, SG3) cut into on one side, tied by oval barred grid on 1854 folded letter to Boston, Mass., showing "Halifax Nova Scotia/NO 22 1854" double arc origin d.s. (on reverse) and "5 Boston Br. Pkt./Nov 25" c.d.s., filing fold crosses the left 1d stamp, Fine example of the 5 pence packet rate from Halifax to Boston, rated "5" (inland due) on arrival at U.S. port. SG 1.

Nova Scotia 1851, 3d dark blue (3), two singles with large to clear margins except right stamp has small clipped corner, cancelled by barred oval grid and left stamp just tied by light "Paid 10" circular handstamp in red on 1859 (Mar. 7) envelope (small tear at left, bit soiled) from Guysborough to Brooklyn, N.Y. "via Overland Mail" through Truro (Mar. 14), Amherst (Mar. 17) and St. John (Mar. 18), the 6 pence or 10¢ overland rate through St. John and Maine. SG 2.

Nova Scotia 1851, 6d yellow green (4), bright color and large margins all around, tied by barred oval grid on 1855 envelope (tiny tear at bottom) to Boston, Mass. showing "Annapolis N.S./OC 15 1855" exchange office double arc d.s., while on front there is "New Brunswick" circular undated handstamp in blue and unframed circular "Paid/10/Cents" handstamp in red applied at U.S. border, Very Fine and choice 10 cent overland rate cover. Nova Scotia 1857, 6d dark green (5), wonderfully rich and prooflike color and impression, large margins showing portion of adjoining stamp, tied by barred oval grid and "Paid 10" circular handstamp in red on 1859 embossed lady's envelope to Salisbury Cove, Me., showing "Guysborough N.S./JU 29 59" origin and "Antigonish N.S" (?) double arc d.s. on reverse, front with "St. John New Brunswick/JY 4 1859" exchange office c.d.s., Extremely Fine. SG 6.

Lot 246

Nova Scotia 1860-63, 5¢ deep blue (10c), three singles tied by circular barred grid 1865 envelope (with original enclosure) from Advocate Harbour to Eugene City, Oregon via Parsborough N.S. (Aug. 26) and Amherst N.S. (Aug. 28), the stamps and cover have various faults, nevertheless an interesting 15 cent rate cover from a small way office which had no postal marking device. SG 25.

Although the rate from Canada and New Brunswick to the West Coast had been reduced to ten cents in 1864, the 15 cent rate from New Brunswick remained in effect until January 1, 1868.

Lot 248

Nova Scotia 1860-63, 8½¢ deep green on yellowish (11), indistinctly cancelled on 1861 envelope to Boston, Mass., showing "Halifax Nova Scotia/DE 12 1861" rimless origin c.d.s. (on reverse) and "Boston N. Pkt. 5/Dec 17" c.d.s., the stamp has faults due to its having been applied over the edge of the creased envelope, nevertheless a Fine appearing example of the short-lived 19 month 8½ cent rate by Cunard steamer to a U.S. port of arrival. SG 14.

The rate was eventually increased to 10 cents on May 1, 1862.

Nova Scotia 1860-63, 10¢ vermilion (12), tied by barred oval grid on 1866 folded letter to New York "pr. Express Mail pr. Empress" via Windsor N.S. (Nov. 20), showing "Halifax Nova Scotia/NO 20 66" rimless origin c.d.s. as well as transit on reverse, envelope a little crumpled and soiled, interesting example of the ad hoc usage of the non-contract Favor's Express service by the New Brunswick P.O. whereby mail was placed in special bags by the Windsor Post Office.
